Moving Right Along

It's hard to believe we're nearly to the end of January already. Seems like my birthday was just last weekend.

The weather warmed up to normal for a bit, but is back to being colder than usual for the rest of the week.  There might even be snow/ice on Thursday night/Friday morning. I suppose I should have a quick look at the pantry and hit the grocery store tomorrow night so as to avoid, for once, the pre-Winter Death 20xx shopping panic.  Off the top of my head the only thing I can think to get are chickpeas so I can make hummus and maybe a box of salad greens.  I've got everything else and I could always eat cooked veggies instead of salad. Maybe I'll ditch the store anyway if the traffic is bad.

In one of my birthday cards, I was given some cash and told to use it to sign up for NetFlix. That sounded like a fine idea, so I did just that.  I have to say I really like it.  Between the DVDs and streaming video, there is always something new to watch. The selection is great--lots of old movies so I can get my classic movie fix and plenty of new stuff too.  This past weekend I managed to watch Appaloosa and Michael Clayton, two movies I missed in the theater.  I've had fun free associating search terms and I really like being able to search for actors, directors and genres.  Heck, just finding obscure stuff and adding it to my queue is half the fun!

Upcoming Interview
I found out today at lunchtime that the kind folks at Battelle want to interview me for a job at the Pacific Northwest National Lab. Next week. The preliminary agenda has me talking to people on Wed and Thurs so presumably they'll fly me out on Tues and fly me back on Friday.  My boss isn't happy about my being gone four days, but everything that can be caught up and done is already caught up and done.  I even spent half an hour today painting out x-ray numbers on x-ray sleeves so the clinic can assign them new numbers and another hour reading journal articles.

If the interview goes well, I can only imagine how irked people will be if I end up taking a job somewhere else.  I told my boss this past summer that I was actively looking for other employment and that I didn't think I was a good fit for the office.  I'm not doing this just to piss people off, though I suspect that's what they'll think.

Birthday Weekend!

No big trip or celebration this year, just a quiet weekend at home. The most exciting thing I did was use some spray foam to fill up some gaps in my house.  I was going to finally finish the painting job in the kitchen, but with the outside temperature being in the teens, I was worried the exterior wall and trim might be too cool  for good paint performance.  It won't hurt to wait until later in the week when temperatures are warmer.  I used the non-painting time to clean the house, tidy up the computer and to knit.  I also finally signed up for NetFlix so I can stream movies on the computer.  My evening's entertainment was watching Up on DVD.

Today's big fun was spending most of the day in my pajamas, streaming a movie to my computer and then going out to see Sherlock Holmes at the theater. (Yes, I did bathe first.)  It was a good movie though I wasn't terribly pleased with how the fight scenes were filmed.  I dislike choppy, blurry action since it seems to be used as a cover for bad fight work and it can, in large doses, cause a bit of motion sickness.  I hope there are sequels in the works.  Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law did well together as Holmes and Watson. I'd like to see them reprise the roles.

All in all, it was a relaxing weekend.  I've got a long list of things to get done around the house in the coming weeks.  I should start thinking about the list of things to do outside the house for when the weather warms up this spring.  But that can wait a few more days....

Happy New Year!

I had a snowy but fun out of state trip for the holidays. My return was delayed one day by a late departure time and a snowy highway, but that worked out just fine as it also meant I had a chance to finish the jigsaw puzzle my mom had started two days before.

My niece and nephew were cute and hyper as always.  Niece was still amazed about the whole knitting thing.  I promised to get her some knitting needles for her birthday and to teach her to knit. Nephew wasn't so enamored of the knitting, but did get in on helping bake cookies.  The three of us didn't even make a mess!

Sis was very pleased with her socks and immediately put them on.  Niece always steals her mom's socks, so now I'll have to make niece some socks too. She asked if I could make some in pink, blue and purple. Conveniently I happen to have some yarn in just those colors.  Sis and I also hit a yarn shop near their house where she purchased yarn for me to knit her 4 more pair of socks (bringing her total to 6 pair) and I bought the yarn for her February Lady Sweater. (I inadvertently bought enough yarn for both the pullover and cardigan versions, so I guess I'll make both!)

I spend New Year's Eve driving home, arriving at my house between 6 and 7pm.  TCM was kind enough to be showing the Thin Man movies in order as their NYE marathon, so I watched a couple of them while I unpacked/unwound from my trip.  I spent New Year's Day watching the Rose Bowl parade, the Rose Bowl game and cleaning the house.  I didn't have the time or the interest to clean things up to my usual new year standards, but the house is clean, if still somewhat cluttered about the edges.

I hope you each had a fun, relaxing and enjoyable set of holidays and wish you all the best in the coming year!  I didn't think 2009 was all that bad, but apparently it was pretty rough on a lot of folks. In any event, I'm looking forward to see what 2010 brings!
